The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme has been promoting international understanding in Tokushima Prefecture and elsewhere in Japan since 1987. It recruits young people from all over the world to join local communities as language teachers and international relations officers. There are currently some 100 JET participants placed at schools and government offices in Tokushima prefecture.
The Association for Japan Exchange and Teaching (AJET) is the organization that represents most JET participants and coordinates many of their activities. In Tokushima, the highlight of the AJET calendar is the musical, which has been a major annual event for the past 28 years. Past productions include Hercules: Awa Hero (2016), Rapunzel (2017), TokuSing: Tokushima’s Got Talent (2018), Aladdin: A Whole New World (2019), and Wizard of Oz (2026).
Our performances use both simple English and Japanese to entertain and communicate, including many popular songs from both languages. We perform at several venues across the prefecture to ensure that as many people as possible can see the musical. In the spirit of cultural exchange and education, the AJET musical has always been a non-profit project. Entry to all performances is free of charge.

JETプログラムは「語学指導等を行う外国青年招致事業」（The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme）の略称です。JETプログラムというのは、昭和62年度から日本の外国語教育の充実と地域レベルでの国際交流の進展を目的として、世界各地から青年を外国語指導助手又は国際交流員等として学校や地域自治体団体へ招聘しているものです。現在徳島県においては、約100人ほどのJET参加者がいます。
JETプログラム参加者の会「AJET」（The Association for Japan Exchange and Teaching）は、現役JET参加者の有志によって構成された、自主サポート団体です。また、地域国際交流の推進の為様々な活動をしています。なかでも、ミュージカルは27年という長い間徳島の皆様に親しまれており、最近のミュージカルでは「ヘラクレス：アワ・ヒーロー」（2016年）、「剣山の上のラプンツェル」（2017年）、「徳シング：徳島にはタレントがあるぞ」（2018年）、「アラジン：新しい世界へ」(2019年）や「オッズの魔法使い」(2026年）などがあります。
このミュージカルは簡単な英語と日本語で演じ、日本と外国の有名な歌もたくさん登場します。たくさんの県民の皆様にお越しいただけるように、毎年複数の会場で開催しています。このミュージカルは、地域国際交流と教育を目的とする事業ですので入場料は無料となっております。たくさんの方々にミュージカルをご覧になってもらい、英語の楽しさや国際交流に興味を持ってもらえるようユニークな演出やオリジナルの脚本で工夫を凝らした内容となっております。

Little Dorothy, dreaming of moving to Tokyo, was whisked away to Munchkin Land! There she faced Glinda, the Good Witch of Kagawa, after her house accidentally dropped on the Wicked Witch of Ehime’s sister, the Witch of Kochi. Travelling along with the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Lion, each member made their way to Oz in search of their dreams.
In AJET’s theatrical reproduction of the fairytale of Cinderella, we meet our main character as she accompanies her horrible stepmother and stepsisters as they go shopping. It is here that she meets a mysterious man. Although it is love at first sight, she doesn’t realize he is the crown prince. Upon learning that the queen and king are planning to hold a grand ball, Cinderella seeks to attend herself. But will her horrible stepmother allow her? How will she overcome the obstacles in her path? Will she find her own happy ending?
Who lives on the pineapple under the sea? That’s SpongeBob! The world’s most popular sea sponge lives a happy life in a town called Bikini Bottom, but when the dormant volcano begins to erupt, the town is left on the brink of devastation. Can SpongeBob and his ocean animal friends save the town? In this exciting new musical, let’s meet the characters from the popular anime.
Can love cross the boundary between the sea and land? The mermaid princess named Ariel becomes enchanted by the human prince and his life on earth. To get a chance to be with him, she makes a dangerous deal with an evil sea witch in exchange for becoming human. Will Ariel be able to win his love before the witch’s magical powers run out?
For its 25th anniversary, the AJET Musical brings the story of Aladdin to the modern day setting of New York City. Aladdin is a poor pizza delivery boy who falls in love with Jasmine, the sheltered daughter of a rich CEO. Standing in their way is Jafar, a talented but selfish street magician who will do anything to be able to do real magic. But when Aladdin finds a magic lamp with a genie inside, all of their lives will be changed forever. Come join us for Aladdin – A Whole New World, for a classic tale of adventure, romance and magic!
Buster Moon, the eternally optimistic koala bear is on a serious mission to save his failing theater. As a final effort, he holds a singing contest and selects the most talented singers Tokushima City has ever seen! The competition is fierce and only one of the finalists can win the grand prize.
Rapunzel has grown up in a tower with her Aunties, longing for adventure in the outside world. When Flynn Rider stumbles upon the tower, the two become unlikely friends and set off on a journey full of colourful people, frying pans, songs and dancing along the road to see the “floating lights”. What will the outside world have in store for Rapunzel after all these years?
Our story takes place in Tokushima. Hercules has always been different from everyone else. His super strength and clumsiness keep him from making friends, and he feels like he doesn’t belong. Little does he know, he is actually the son of the Greek god Zeus; Hercules was stolen from heaven as a baby and turned mortal. In order to restore his godhood, he must become a true hero. He travels to remote Iya Valley to find Phil, a legendary hero trainer, and he works hard to become strong.
While he trains to be a hero, Hercules’ evil uncle Hades, the Greek god of the underworld, is stirring up trouble. Hades plots to take over the heavens with his oni underlings, Pain and Panic, and a woman named Meg.
Hercules has many obstacles to overcome on the path to reclaiming his godhood, and he must prove himself a true hero in order to find the place where he belongs.
Foreign participants of the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET), along with the help of other foreign and Japanese volunteers from the Tokushima community, will perform the musical “Anna and the Snow Queen” this spring. This marks the 21st year of the not-for-profit group’s annual musical, which aims to provide a free and fun English-language educational experience.
This year’s story features Elsa as the Queen of Tokushima, who runs away from home after accidentally creating a permanent winter in the land. Elsa’s sister Anna, kakigori salesman Kristoff, and magical snowman Olaf go on an adventure in search of the runaway queen. The project features English songs and uses an original script of simple English mixed with Japanese, so children and adults of any level can enjoy the musical while practicing listening to English from native speakers.
Nemo is finally old enough to go to school and has big ideas about the adventures he wants to go on. His father, Marlin, isn’t quite ready for him to go off on his own, though. When Nemo disobeys his father, he is captured and taken to a sushi shop! With help from new friends like Dory, Gil, and a couple of goofy sharks, Nemo and Marlin conquer their fears and discover new strengths as they fight to be reunited.
A contest was held this year at local schools to draw the musical poster! Three winners were picked to have their drawing displayed around Tokushima!
“The Little Mermaid” is the story of Ariel, a sixteen-year-old mermaid princess from the Naruto Straits, who is dissatisfied with life under the sea and curious about the human world. Mermaids are forbidden from showing themselves in front of humans, but this does not stop Ariel’s curiosity, especially after she catches a glimpse of the handsome Prince Eric and falls madly in love. Soon, this love embroils Ariel in a pact with the evil sea-witch, Ursula. Will Ariel find a way to live on the land? Can Prince Eric return her love? What will become of Ariel’s pact with Ursula?
“Beauty and the Beast” is the story of a prince who is cursed to be a beast because of his selfish and unloving nature. The only way to break this curse is if he learns to love himself as well as others. In the nearby town of Kamiyama there lives a girl named Belle who is a little different from everyone else. She wants something more in life than to marry the handsomest man in town, Gaston, who is also arrogant and obnoxious. The story really begins when Belle goes to the castle and meets the beast, who at first treats her very rudely, but with the help of the castle servants something starts to develop between Belle and the Beast. Can Belle break the curse? Will Gaston marry Belle? Find out by coming to the musical!
A young brother and sister are thrown into an exciting adventure when they meet an old pirate who gives them a treasure map. With a wonderful captain and a questionable crew, they set sail for Tokushima in search of buried treasure.
Along the way, they meet lots of crazy characters who want the treasure for themselves: ninjas, famous pirates, and a very angry love-sick girl. This turns out to be the greatest adventure of these siblings’ lives. However, they realize that what they’re looking for and what they discover isn’t buried treasure after all.”
This year, the Assistant Language Teachers of Tokushima will be performing the story of Momotaro.
The play is based on the famous story of a boy , who grows up to fight off evil demons living nearby.
A Night of Fantasy is Tokushima’s 11th annual AJET musical. This year’s production follows a group of elementary students on a school excursion to an English theatre. Join the students as they experience performances of their favourite fairytales: Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood, and Cinderella. Follow Goldilocks on her adventures to find one that’s “just right.” Watch as Little Red Riding Hood encounters a few dangers on her way to Grandma’s house. Finally, experience Cinderella’s story – will she ever find true love?? JETs from around the ken have come together to create a musical bursting with humour, dancing, and singing. Audience participation will be required at each venue. We will choose volunteers 30 minutes before the scheduled start time.
Two brothers are living at home with their parents. The parents are tired of the boys and feel that it is time that they find wives, get married, and leave home. The youngest son, Groomio, is no problem as he has a girlfriend who he desperately wants to marry, but his older brother, Bruce, is not interested in women and is content as he is. The real trouble, however, is the family tradition that states the eldest son must be the first to marry and leave home.
Will Groomio manage to make his beer-loving older brother attractive to women? Will Bruce find a girl who can accept him? And who is the evil woman who is getting in the way of all this? A love comedy of the very modern variety!
